The GEWEKE CARING FOR WOMEN FOUNDATION
The planning for the 2008 Pink October events has begun! THANK YOU to everyone who gave to Pink October in 2007. We had a very successful year and were able to help many women with their efforts in fighting breast cancer.
Pink October was started in 1997 by Larry Geweke and a committed group of people in our community. We started with the Race for Awareness. For the first 3 years the money raised was donated to the American Cancer Society. Our goal was to encourage women to get mammograms and bring awareness to the need for early detection.
From 2000 to 2006, Pink October partnered with Fremont Rideout Health Group and Sutter North Medical Foundation to offer low cost mammograms to local uninsured or under insured women. The women would pay a small fee for the screening and Pink October would pay the rest. Pink October would donate the remaining money between Fremont Rideout and Sutter North.
In 2006, Sutter Buttes Imaging partnered with Pink October, and together with Fremont Rideout and Sutter North decided that there would no longer be a cost to Pink October for mammograms. It was because of this generous donation that we were able to start the Geweke’s Caring for Women Foundation. Pink October now puts all its proceeds to the Foundation. The goal of the Foundation is to help local breast cancer patients with their financial needs. The Foundation has helped pay for utilities, house payments, even funeral expenses. Since the start of the Foundation in November of 2006 through January 10, 2008, 63 women have been helped and over $67,000 had been given out. We hope to now raise awareness about the Foundation so more women in our community can get the help they need during this difficult time in their life.
Sincerely,
